Piano Services
Britain’s most comprehensive and affordable piano service!

A Steinway grand piano has more than 12,000 individual parts. Each one plays an important role in the musical performance and enduring investment value of a Steinway. Unfortunately, many piano rebuilders use less expensive and therefore lesser-quality parts. This practice can only diminish your piano’s performance and value.

At the Restoration Centre we will never take shortcuts. We use only genuine Steinway replacement parts.

For example, the patented Steinway soundboard is the heart of the incomparable power and sound of a Steinway piano. Its creation is a complex process, tapering the finest Sitka spruce from 5 mm at its edge to 8 mm at the centre. For this reason, the Restoration Centre is the only place in the UK where you can have a genuine Steinway soundboard installed. Only genuine Steinway & Sons hammers and action parts are used, to perfectly preserve the intuitive touch and control of the Steinway mechanism.

Remember: the best safeguard that your cherished piano remains 100% a Steinway is to choose the Steinway Restoration Centre.

“UNLESS YOUR STEINWAY HAS 100% GENUINE STEINWAY PARTS, IT ISN’T A STEINWAY”

We are the only piano rebuilder in the United Kingdom authorised by Steinway & Sons to perform authentic restorations.

The London branch of Steinway opened in 1875. Since that time, Steinway pianos have been tuned and restored from our London Restoration Centre.

The current Restoration Centre was opened in 1965, incorporating the world-renowned London Training Programme for servicing and restoration of Steinway pianos. Technicians from Steinway agents worldwide, as well as UK apprentices, have learnt and passed down the unique skills developed here in London for over 125 years. A reputation for the highest quality repairs and servicing on Steinway pianos has spread internationally; clients from far and wide send their valued instruments to the Steinway Restoration Centre.

At the Steinway Restoration Centre there is a strong sense of continuing the traditional Steinway aims and values. In 1853, Henry Steinway set the standard:”To Build The Best Piano Possible”. In turn, we are committed to the highest standard of piano maintenance and restoration.

The one question we are asked regularly is, “How often should we have our Steinway serviced?”
Naturally, this depends on the amount and type of playing the instrument sustains. A busy concert venue would have its piano serviced at least annually. Conversely, those who play ‘just for pleasure’ may need their piano serviced only every three to five years. We can discuss your programme individually.

Below are some typical examples of servicing schedules. Our representative can also advise you when your piano requires attention.

ONE DAY SERVICE:
This piano would be fairly new, recently reconditioned, or very well maintained and in good condition. The work will include cleaning the interior, servicing the pedal mechanism, reshaping the hammers if needed, adjusting the regulation and toning.

TWO OR THREE DAY SERVICE:
Your piano has now had good use for three to five years. In addition to the one-day service, we will attend to, as required: repinning the action centres, rebushing the keys and regulating the dampers.

FOUR OR FIVE DAY SERVICE:
This piano has received hard wear or little maintenance for a number of years. In addition to the work above, we will attend to as required: restringing the top two sections of strings, replacing the worn action leathers and felts.

SIX OR SEVEN DAY SERVICE:
Your piano has received no maintenance, apart from tuning, for a great number of years: vital materials are wearing out and now need restoration.
The soundboard and strings are in a serviceable condition. In addition to the work outlined above, we will concentrate on fitting new hammers and shanks and attending to, as required: replacing the key damper lift felts and the key check leathers, voicing of the hammers and reweighting the keys to your preference.

Steinway pianos are made to last for generations. Properly maintained, their history of financial appreciation is legendary.

Steinway pianos have outperformed notable investments such as vintage automobiles, wines and classic yachts. Not to mention other pianos. While other piano brands depreciate in value over time, Steinway pianos actually appreciate in value.

All work is performed by Steinway craftspeople, who are thoroughly educated in the intricate processes and procedures of rebuilding Steinway pianos. No one else has all the original designs, specifications and necessary equipment, or is as capable of restoring your Steinway to its finest state.

The financial wisdom of investing in the expertise of the Steinway Restoration Centre is clear. Moreover, the muscial rewards are even greater. A properly restored Steinway fills your home, and your heart, with sound and enjoyment which no one can put a price on.
