STEINWAY & SONS NAMES MICHAEL FEINSTEIN
TO INTERNATIONAL ARTIST ROSTER
Michael started playing piano by ear when he was five. As a teenager, he played at weddings and parties in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from high school, he worked in local piano lounges for two years, moving to Los Angeles when he was 20. Through the widow of the legendary Steinway Artist Oscar Levant, he was introduced to Ira Gershwin in July 1977. He became his assistant for six years, granting him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, which he has since performed and recorded. Gershwin's influence provided a solid base upon which Mr. Feinstein has not only evolved into a captivating performer, composer and arranger of his own original music, but has also become an unparalleled interpreter of music legends such as Steinway Artist Immortals Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington. His Manhattan nightclub, "Feinsteinˇ¦s at the Regency", has presented the leading stars of musical theatre and jazz such as Karen Mason, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Steinway Artist Ann Hampton Callaway and Dame Cleo Laine. He appears there for a sold-out holiday engagement every year. Speaking of Mr. Feinstein's affiliation, Peter B. Goodrich, Steinway's Vice President in charge of Concert and Artist Activities said, "All of us at Steinway & Sons are excited and proud to welcome Michael Feinstein to our worldwide artist family. We have long recognized that Michael knows a fine way to treat a Steinway, and we are thrilled to assist him in his vast array of performances and music projects." Since 1853, Steinway & Sons has been maker of the world's most sought after pianos, and its Concert and Artist Department has served the most talented and revered pianists throughout the globe since the late 1860's, making available instruments for performance and recording, television, and radio. Included on the Steinway Artist roster have been such immortals as Cy Coleman, George Gershwin, Vladimir Horowitz, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Arthur Rubinstein. The members of the Steinway Artist family are each as unique as the instruments the Company makes. Whether their music is classical, jazz, popular, religious, or new age, the common thread among the 1300 artists who grace the roster is their belief in the Steinway piano as an instrument that will allow them to express themselves as no other piano can. The House of Steinway deeply values the artistry of Michael Feinstein and is committed to assisting him in his performance and recording activities throughout the world.
